S.W. A.T. #2 Log Update

The latest communication on the S.W.A.T. # 2 boat in the gulf coast. From:Lloyd Culp Jr. to James Meador August 30th
Subject: SWAT Boat Update:
Jimbo, Weather has kept recovery boats off the water over the past few days, but SWAT 2 will be moving to the lower Pascagoula River later this week to fill in for the release of Vessel of Opportunity (VOO) boats that have been released. W hear that a few gannets and pelicans have been recovered from that area. The birds that are being retrieved are not always obviously oiled, some appearing to have been injured by fishing activity, but vets are detecting evidence of oiling when the birds are examined at the rehab centers. We expect to move SWAT 2 to a marina on Dauphin Island later this week to patrol the Little Dauphin Island Unit of Bon Secour NWR and perhaps help out a Gaillard Island, depending on what we hear from that area this week. Before the weather hit us late last week, birds were being retrieved from north of Dauphin and Gaillard. As an overall strategy, the Mobile command plans to keep SWAT and APHIS boats on recovery while releasing some of the VOO boats. I heard over the weekend that we are still recovering sufficient birds in Alabama and Mississippi to maintain recovery operations for some time, so I expect we will be working well into the fall.
